Stromness Golf Club, Warbeth Course, Orkney. (1890 – 1925)

Founded in 1890.

The first nine-hole course was located at Warbeth.

The club moved to its current location in 1925.

In his speech at the opening of the present course in 1925 Dr. Macnish reflected on the old course and said - “He was very pleased to be there that day to take part in the opening of the new Stromness golf course. He had been a visitor to Stromness for many years, and he had always enjoyed a game on the old golf links. It was on the 11 April 1890 that a meeting was held in the Town Hall when it was decided to form a Stromness Golf Club. The minutes in the next year showed that a number of people from Kirkwall wanted to join. They did so, and paid their subscription of 10 shillings a year. In 1894 it was decided to admit ladies at the annual subscription of 2s/6d, and a committee was appointed to lay out the course for them.”

Mr Mackay, president of the club in 1925, also shared his memories of the old course; “During the past 35 years Stromness had a golf course, and a very good one too. The old course had a certain draw back, and that was that it was too far from the town. Another thing was that they were only tenants from year to year, and therefore could do very few improvements."
