Rousay Golf Club, Orkney. (1890s, 1920/30s and 1960s)

The club first appeared during the 1890s. There was a course in the 1920s that continued until WW2. The club made another brief appearance in the 1960s. 

From the Orkney Herald and Weekly Advertiser and Gazette for the Orkney & Zetland – Wednesday 15 December 1897; “ROUSAY – Golf – The annual meeting of the Rousay Golf Club was held in the Public School, Sourin, on Tuesday last, when the club ball was fixed to take place on the 4 January next.”

The club reappears in the 1920s with a course at Inner Quandale. The green-keeper was Hugh Marwick. The club played regular club matches against Kirkwall and Stromness.

The Rousay Golf Club made a donation to the Scottish Red Cross in 1940 and 1941; 1940 -  Rousay Golf Club proceeds from a fancy dress ball, £2/15 shillings; 1941 – W Walls, secretary, from the proceeds of a dance, £3i5 shillings.

From the Orkney Herald and Weekly Advertiser and Gazette for the Orkney & Zetland – Tuesday 13 July 1948 – “The tale of the Stromness golfers makes no better telling. Scheduled to play their annual visit to Rousay’ golf course , the weather daunted even them, and that trip has still to be made.”

The club went into abeyance following WW2.

The club reappears in the 1960s with a course at Whome.

The club held many fund raising activities were held.

The club held a successful entertainment and presentation evening in February 1968. Golf prizes presented to the following; Challenge Cup - Hugh Lyon (given by Master Bakers’ Association); Miniature Cup – Hugh Lyon (George Donaldson, butcher); One Club Competition – Hugh Lyon (R Garden); Handicap Competition – Jim Marwick; Fourball Foursome – Hugh Mainland and Jim Gibson. 

The following is a recollection from a local who rembers the course played n in the 1960s – “A course was developed in the early 1960s. I remember my father going over for the opening but I wasn't allowed as alcohol would be freely available and I was too young!”

The Ordnance Survey Map below is from the early 1900s. It shows “Golf Course Corner,” Whoom (Whome) can be seen at the bottom.
