Laggan Golf Club, Highland. (1896 - WW2)
Report on the proposed course in February 1896.
Below is evidence of the earlier club at Laggan in 1896.
The Ordnance Survey Map shows Gaskbeg, location of the course.
It seems that the club at Gergask goes into abeyance.
The club is revived in May 1899 with a course at Blaragie Farm.
The later club appears in the early 1920s.
In 1923 the secretary was A Torrance, Gergask, Laggan and the green-keeper Ian McPherson. A 9-hole course with a membership of 35. Visitors’ fees were 1/- a day, 2/6d a week, 5/- a month and 10/6d a season. Family season tickets were 21/-. The station at Newtonmore was 8 miles away. Local hotel was the Loch Laggan.
In the mid 1920s the secretary was R Nicolson, Gergask Schoolhouse, Laggan and the greenkeeper W Macpherson. The amateur course record was 32.
The AGM was held in June 1928. The treasurer issued the balance sheet which showed a balance in hand of £15. The following office-bearers were elected for the coming year; Chieftain, Duncan Macgregor; Gaskbeg; President, Alexander Mackay, Gallovie; Captain, Donald Cameron; Secretary and Treasurer, Alexander Torrance, Gergask; Committee – James Gillies, D Campbell and Alexander Macpherson. James Grant was appointed greenkeeper for the season.
The Maclennan monthly medal competition for July 1928 was won by the captain, Donald Cameron, with a score of 92 for 18-holes.
The winner of the June 1934 monthly medal was Alexander MacIntyre, 74.
Result of the Laggan Club's mixed foursome played in July 1934. First, D Finlayson and N MacLean; second, Mrs Finlayson and J Reid.
In the club’s final appearance in 1940, the secretary was D Campbell, Craigdhu House, Laggan and the green-keeper A MacIntyre. Membership at this time was 30. Visitors’ fees were now 1/6d a day. Sunday play was not allowed.
