Fallen Rocks Golf Course, Sannox, Arran. (1900s)
Little is known of this unusual five-hole course, but well worth recording.
Article from the Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald Friday 30 October 1908 - “Arran is mentioned by the author of the “Book of bad Golf” in his remarks on the ubiquity of the game. On the west side of Arran, near the Fallen Rocks, he says, that there are three cabins clumped together. There is no road, the shore on either side is practically impassable, the only means of transit to the nearest village – some miles away – is by rowing boat, and even this is only possible in calm weather, owing to the rugged nature of the shore. But when I chanced upon this diminutive hamlet last summer, I found that the occupants of the three cabins had taken advantage of the only stretch of grass and moss on the shore to establish a golf course. True, there were only five-holes, and short at that – the longest being about one hundred and sixty yards. A lawn mower, unsupported by any other tools, scarcely kept the putting greens in championship order, and discarded preserved fruit tins made somewhat ugly, though quite satisfactory cups. Sporting the course certainly was, but I doubt if even the most brazen of hotel proprietors, had a hotel been there, would have described it as a “good seaside links.” But the point is that the three cabins could not do without their game”.
