Extract from a report in the Kikudbrightshire Advertiser Friday 5 June 1914 – “The laying out of the new course at Auchencairn has proceeded apace, and it has been arranged that the opening, to be performed by the President, Mrs Mackie, should take plae on Thursday 25 June. The site is immediately behind the village, and to Messrs. Callan, and D Chalmers, Dallbeatie, credit is due for the manner in which the ground has been utilised. The preparation of the greens, fencing, etc., has been excellently carried out by F J Johnstone, Claycroft.

Course details; Hole One, 317 yards, Bogey 5; Hole Two, 352 yards, Bogey 5; Hole Three, 413 yards, Bogey 5; Hole Four, 110 yards, Bogey 3; Hole Five, 293 yards, Bogey 4; Hole Six, 333 yards, Bogey 4; Hole Seven, 307 yards, Bogey 4; Hole Eight, 280 yards, Bogey 4; Hole Nine, 263 yards, Bogey 4; Total yardage, 2,668 yards; Bogey, 38.”

The first two holes are dog-legged. Bunkers are to be found in the nature of open ditches, and a dyke, which runs the whole breadth of the course, forms an excellent hazard.”

The course was formally opened by Mrs Mackie on Thursday 25 June 1914. Over 100 hundred people attended the opening on a warm and fine day. Following the usual speeches and pleasantries the first match took place, four ladies took part; Mrs Lansdale and Miss Fortune against Mrs Baxter and Miss N McNewall, Dallbeattie. Other games were quickly arranged and enjoyed following .
