Hohenprießnitz Private Golf Course, Saxony. (1927 - 1945)

According to the 1931 yearbook of the German Golf Association, there was a private golf course owned by Moritz Graf Hohenthal in Hohenprießnitz in 1931.The existence of the golf course was confirmed to me in 2002 by Rolf Schulze from the VereinsringHohenprießnitz: "However, the golf course was not located in the castle park, but in the floodplain behind it, directly behind the dyke. For the time being, I have enclosed a sketch showing the known location (in turquoise)."

Georg Graf Hohenthal (1877-1971), son of Moritz Graf Hohenthal (1845-1927), himself reports from his private golf course in “Golf” 15 February 1930 as it follows:

“But if you have, like me, been forced to build your own small course of 4 greens for several years ago - I live 50 kilometres from the nearest golf course [in Gaschwitz, south of Leipzig] - then you gain practical and theoretical experience. I would like to report on the former. The four small greens are very favourably located and have only been 1/10 cultivated and seeded, because I noticed that on this frequently flooded but not acidified ancient sheep pasture, between weeds such as white clover, plantain, and dandelion, among others, about 80 to 90% of the finest golf grasses grew: Agrostis, festuca ovina and rubra....”

In the membership directory of Golf-Club Gaschwitz Graf Georg Hohenthal is included as a member since 1923 living at Hohenprießnitz nr. Eilenburg, Tel. Hohenprießnitz 1.He was the last count of Hohenprießnitz Castle from 1927 to 1945.The Counts of Hohenthal were expropriated after the end of the war. Interestingly the silverware of the Counts of Hohenthal in Hohenprießnitz was discovered in 1985 and 1986 in two buried boxes in the grounds of Hohenprießnitz Castle near Eilenburg. Today it is part of the collection of the Eilenburg Town Museum and is partly on display in the permanent exhibition. The finds were made in Germany, England and Austria between 1850 and 1945 and include not only cutlery but also serving accessories, candlesticks, gifts, some jewellery and other objects. Some of these are made of solid silver, some with silver plating and in various states of preservation.
